Learn at the home of Iyengar yoga.
The home of Iyengar yoga is in Pune, in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Experienced students travel to study yoga in India from all over the world, to learn first-hand from the family of B.K.S. Iyengar.
Founded in 1975, the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute is dedicated to Mr Iyengar’s late wife, and most instruction nowadays is by their children, Geeta and Prashant.
The RIMYI has a library with thousands of books on yoga practice and philosophy, human anatomy and physiology, traditional Indian medicine and modern science (NOTE: we also sell a range of books by the Iyengar family from our own shop at Iyengar Yoga London, Maida Vale). All yoga classes are taught in English, and they teach both ‘the essence of yoga’ and ‘values of life’.
Applying to study yoga in India
To attend, you need to have been practising Iyengar yoga for at least eight years, including inverted yoga poses. Your regular yoga teacher will have to certify your application. Iyengar Yoga (UK) handles all applications from the UK. It is not possible to apply directly to Pune to study yoga in India, nor can Iyengar Yoga London process applications.
