On 2 April we will celebrate Silvia Prescott’s contribution to Iyengar yoga and to the Iyengar yoga Institute Maida Vale. Silvia was a highly respected teacher who will always be remembered by the many people who were fortunate to have attended her classes. 

She first met BKS Iyengar in 1971 in London and started teaching yoga for the Inner London Education Authority in the early 1970s when she was already in her forties. She was a founder member and teacher at the Institute when it was established in 1984. When Guruji came to teach throughout the UK Silvia was always available to assist and to drive him around.  For over 25 years from the late 1980s she trained Iyengar yoga teachers at the Institute, her home studio in West Hampstead and with Penny Chaplin in central London. During that time she trained hundreds of teachers, not only from London, but from all over the country.  She last taught at Maida Vale on Guruji’s 90th birthday. She is greatly missed.

Silvia was involved with the organisation of Iyengar yoga nationally and was the Chair of the BKS Iyengar yoga Teacher’s Association in the 1990s. This became the present national organisation, Iyengar Yoga (UK).

Sunday 2 April, 2.30 – 5pm  

The event will comprise a class taught by Marco Cannavo, a former student of Silvia, a reading of Silvia’s poetry by Alaric Newcombe who also attended classes at Silvia’s home, and an exhibition of photographs from her personal collection, alongside tea and cake.

Please book you place on reception and pay in cash on the day. We suggest a minimum suggested donation of £15.

All proceeds will be shared between Age UK and Shelter.
